COLLECTIONS & DRUMCYCLE™

Empty Packaging Collection FAQs

What types of containers can be collected?

We collect used empty industrial packaging ranging from 25-litre containers to 1 000-litre IBCs, including plastic and steel drums, provided they meet programme acceptance and safety requirements.

What information do I need to provide before collection?

Before each collection, please confirm:

  • The number and type of containers
  • The previous contents and GHS classification
  • Availability of the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the last product stored

This information allows us to plan safe, compliant transport and processing.

Do the containers need to be cleaned before collection?

Containers must be fully emptied, drained and securely closed. Pre-washing is not always required; however, containers must be prepared in a condition that allows safe handling and transport, in line with regulatory and SANS 10406 requirements.

Who is responsible for transport documentation?

As the waste generator, you are responsible for providing any required waste or transport documentation under South African legislation. Drumpal will support and guide you to ensure all paperwork is correctly completed.

Can Drumpal refuse to collect containers?

Yes. For safety and compliance reasons, Drumpal may decline collection of containers that are damaged, contaminated, incorrectly prepared or non-compliant. Non-conforming containers may be returned at the customer’s cost.

What happens to the containers after collection?

Each container is assessed and directed to the most responsible recovery option:

  • Reconditioned for reuse
  • Recycled through approved facilities
  • Disposed of at licensed facilities where reuse or recycling is not possible

Will there be additional costs?

Additional charges may apply if:

  • The number of compliant containers differs from the original request
  • Containers are not suitable for reuse or reconditioning
  • IBCs require cleaning, destruction or recycling due to contamination or damage

Any applicable costs will be communicated transparently.

Do you provide EPR or compliance reporting?

Yes. We provide collection and recovery records that can be used to support EPR reporting, audits and sustainability disclosures, in line with EWASA requirements.

Is the programme compliant with South African regulations?

Yes. DrumCycle™ operates in accordance with the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, applicable transport regulations, SANS 10406 and Drumpal’s ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified management systems.

How do I join the DrumCycle™ programme?

Simply contact Drumpal to register your site, after which we will assess your packaging stream and schedule collections that suit your operational needs.

BUYING RECONDITIONED PACKAGING

Product & Supply FAQs

What is reconditioned packaging?

Reconditioned packaging refers to used industrial containers that have been professionally cleaned, inspected, pressure leak tested (where applicable) and prepared for reuse. At Drumpal, reconditioning is carried out in line with SANS 10406, industry standards and our ISO-certified management systems.

Is reconditioned packaging safe to use?

Yes. All suitable drums supplied by Drumpal are pressure leak tested to confirm leak-proofness, and are thoroughly cleaned and inspected before being released for reuse. Only containers that meet our quality, safety and compliance criteria are supplied.

What types of products can be packed in reconditioned containers?

Reconditioned packaging is commonly used for:

  • Industrial chemicals
  • Detergents and cleaning products
  • Oils, resins and additives
  • Water-based and non-food industrial liquids

Customers are responsible for confirming product compatibility with the container and its previous contents.

Are reconditioned containers compliant with regulations?

Yes. Drumpal operates in compliance with:

  • ICCASA SANS 10406
  • ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001
  • Applicable South African environmental and transport legislation

Can reconditioned packaging be used for hazardous chemicals?

Reconditioned packaging may be suitable for certain hazardous products, depending on:

  • The container type and material
  • Previous contents
  • GHS classification and chemical compatibility

Our team will advise on suitability before supply.

How do reconditioned containers compare to new containers?

Reconditioned containers offer:

  • A cost-effective alternative to new packaging
  • Reduced environmental impact
  • Support for circular economy and EPR objectives
  • Proven performance for many industrial applications

Will the containers look new?

Reconditioned containers are clean, functional and leak-tested, but may show minor cosmetic marks or signs of previous use. These do not affect performance, integrity or safety.

Are all containers reconditioned?

Not all used containers are suitable for reconditioning. Containers that fail inspection or pressure testing are recycled or disposed of responsibly through licensed facilities.

Can I return empty containers after use?

Yes. Through our DrumCycle™ Packaging Recovery Programme, customers can return used empty packaging for reuse, recycling or licensed disposal.

Do you provide documentation?

Yes. Where applicable, we provide:

  • Collection and recovery records
  • Compliance documentation
  • Support for EPR and sustainability reporting
